We Adopt Identities That Are Not Ours

What happened to us? What is that past we cling to so tightly? What is it that we have not allowed God to restore?

Many times, we allow our past to become our present and a reflection of our future. We accept what people say about us based on what we did and who we were before knowing God.

The Word of God says:

“…anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
(2 Corinthians 5:17)

Even so, we have adopted an identity that does not belong to us…

When we accept Jesus into our hearts, we are given the title of “Children of God,” because we have been adopted and called His own. Our nature is immediately changed from sinners to forgiven. We are given an identity not based on our own merit or works, but on Jesus Christ.

Why in Jesus? Because it was Jesus who carried all sin, sickness, and even our past… to the cross. His wonderful and costly sacrifice is the reason we now have the opportunity to be forgiven and restored by the power and love of God.

This is our identity: one based on truth and not on lies. Now we can have confidence and assurance that we are in the hands of the Creator of the universe, the Almighty, in the hands of our beloved Father.

Our lives have been renewed, and we have been given the wonderful opportunity to live the present hand in hand with our Lord Jesus, knowing that our future will look nothing like our past. A new story is being written and developed, filled with the perfect will of our God.

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.”
(Ezekiel 36:26–27)
