When Are You Going to Stop Making Excuses?

How many times have you used an excuse to avoid doing what you know you should do? An excuse may sound like an explanation, but many times it becomes a way to avoid responsibility, justify a wrong decision, or remain in the same place.

When you continually justify what you know is wrong, you end up deceiving yourself. The enemy takes advantage of lies to work in the mind and keep you bound to thoughts that prevent you from moving forward.

The Word warns:

“Neither give place to the devil.”
(Ephesians 4:27)

Do not give him any place through lies, blame, or justification. The excuse has to die.

Stop Blaming Others

One of the most common ways to avoid responsibility is to find someone else to blame.

“It was because of what they did to me.”
“It was because of my family.”
“It was because of my circumstances.”
“I am this way because of what I went through.”

Some people even go so far as to blame God for what went wrong.

But Scripture declares:

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights...”
(James 1:17)

What is good comes from God. Do not blame God for decisions, mistakes, or circumstances that He did not produce. If you want to move forward, you need to stop looking for someone to blame and allow God to deal with your heart.

As long as you continue justifying what you need to change, you will remain bound to the same things.

Moses Also Made Excuses

Moses received a calling from God, but he immediately began looking at his own limitations.

He said:

“O my Lord, I am not eloquent... but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.”
(Exodus 4:10)

In other words: “I can’t.”

Moses was looking at what he believed he lacked, while God was looking at what He could do through him.

How many times do we do the same thing?

God opens a door, and we say, “I can’t.”

God calls us to change, and we respond, “That’s just the way I am.”

God shows us something we need to correct, and we answer, “It’s too difficult.”

An excuse will always find a reason to remain the same. Faith finds a reason to obey God.

Do not avoid God’s purpose. What He has for your life is too important to abandon because of an excuse.

Let the Word Enter Your Heart

God wants His Word to enter as light into those areas where you have been living by excuses.

Perhaps you have spent years repeating the same explanation for why you cannot change. But when you allow God’s truth to enter your heart, you begin to think differently.

An excuse says, “I can’t.”

The Word shows you that God can help you.

An excuse looks backward.

Faith looks at what God has said.

An excuse keeps you stuck.

Obedience moves you forward.

Stop feeding what is keeping you stuck.

Do You Still See Yourself as a Victim?

Gideon also looked at his circumstances and found reasons to feel incapable.

When God called him, he answered:

“Behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”
(Judges 6:15)

Gideon was looking at his family, his position, and his limitations. But God was seeing something different.

His past did not have to determine his future.

Perhaps you have also said:

“My family has always been this way.”
“We never had opportunities.”
“No one helped me.”
“I don’t have what others have.”
“After everything I’ve been through, I can’t move forward.”

Do not turn your past into a permanent excuse.

Let go of the past, live the present with God, and begin walking toward the future ahead of you.

You are not called to continually focus on what you lacked. Draw your heart closer to God and allow His truth to change the way you see yourself.

Stop Feeding on Excuses

An excuse becomes food when you repeat the same reasons every day for why you cannot change.

Stop feeding on things that only strengthen defeat.

God says:

“Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.”
(Isaiah 3:10)

Draw near to God. Fill your heart with His Word. Drink from the water of His truth.

Stop feeding thoughts that tell you that you will never be able to do it, that nothing will ever change, or that you will always live the same way.

God has something better than a life ruled by excuses.

Samuel Did Not Make Excuses—He Listened

Samuel was young, but he had something many adults have lost: a willingness to listen to God.

When God called him, Samuel answered:

“Speak; for thy servant heareth.”
(1 Samuel 3:10)

What a different attitude.

Samuel did not say, “I’m too young.”

He did not say, “I don’t know enough.”

He did not say, “Send someone else.”

He said: “Speak.”

When you stop talking about your limitations and begin listening to God, you can understand things you did not understand before.

Prepare your ears to listen.

Perhaps you have talked too much about your problems, your limitations, your past, and everything you think you cannot do. Now allow God to speak.

What Is Your Excuse?

Jeremiah had one too:

“Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.”
(Jeremiah 1:6)

Moses had an excuse.

Gideon had an excuse.

Jeremiah had an excuse.

But God had a purpose for each one of them.

Now the question is: What is yours?

What explanation have you repeated so many times that you have started to believe it?

What are you using to justify why you have not changed?

What is keeping you from obeying what God has already placed before you?

An excuse becomes an obstacle when it takes the place that obedience should have.

It Is Time to Leave the Excuses Behind

Do not allow the enemy to direct your life through thoughts of inability, guilt, or defeat. Stop repeating why you cannot and begin listening to what God says you can do with His help.

You are not your excuse. You are not your past. You are not what you lacked.

Draw your heart closer to God. Open your ears. Receive His Word and allow His truth to change the way you think.

Do what Samuel did and say:

“Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

Christ is coming soon.

“Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.”
(2 Timothy 2:7)

👉 Today, identify the excuse that has kept you stuck and stop feeding it. Stop saying, “I can’t,” “That’s just the way I am,” or “It’s because of what happened to me.” Listen to God, receive His Word, and begin walking in obedience. The excuse has to die so that you can move forward.
